Waste Crime

The newly formed Natural Resources Body that polices the environment laws and waste is a big part of that ‘policing’.

The most common investigation will be the illegal dumping of waste but they will also be concerned with illegal waste sites and the export of waste. The priority will be the illegal waste sites with the Agency being aware of approaching 2000 of these around the country.

Historically we have been used to fines as the main penalty if a person is convicted of a waste crime but the Agency will be looking to highlight areas of danger caused by any example of illegal waste in anticipation that Courts will be minded to consider more serious sentences.

With the change of Agency there is to be more of a concentration on working like the police which will involve profiling and ‘intelligence’. The budget for this area of work is high and we can therefore expect more investigations and prosecutions.
